Neighbors in the Mendenhall Cove area are coming together to lift spirits in Memphis following the tragic shooting death of Memphis Police Officer Martoiya Lang, 32. They held a vigil to honor Officer Lang as well as bring peace and hope to the community.
"I just want to pull our community together and say some prayer, or however everybody wants to deal with it, and have everyone together. This officer lost a life yesterday and she's a hero to me and I think she deserves it," says Matthew Downen, who organized the vigil and is the son of a police officer.
Lang was shot and killed by Treveno Campbell, 21, during a drug-related search warrant at 1062 Mendenhall Cove on Friday. MPD Officer William Vrooman, 32, was also shot; he was released from the Regional Medical Center Friday afternoon.
Lang leaves behind four children, ages 14, 13, 12 and 2. Neighbors in the Mendenhall Cove area wanted to make sure the children heard their prayers.
"Your mom's in a good place. She did what she did for a living and she's always going to be a hero. Just remember mom as a hero," says Downen.
The Bank of Bartlett set up an account to raise money for her family; donations can be made at any of their eight locations as well as on the Bank of Bartlett website.
The Memphis Police Association, along with FOX 13 News and Q107, will be at Wolfchase Galleria on Monday to raise money for the Officer Lang Memorial.
