MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Several Memphis police officers gathered Friday evening at Newby's Bar in midtown Memphis to collect funds for Officer Martoiya Lang, who died earlier in the day in the line of duty.

Officer Lang, a mother of four and nine-year veteran of the police force, and her partner were shot Friday morning while serving a drug warrant.

The gathering was initially scheduled by Tillman Station officers as a holiday party but later changed it in the wake of her passing.

Fellow officers reflected on Lang's life, including a friend who grew up with her.

"Last conversation with Martoiya would've been about a month ago," recalls Javaughn Tucker. "Just remembering growing up as children at high school."

Tucker grew up together with Lang in South Memphis.

"What I remember most about was awesome," he said. "Kind-hearted person, very friendly, funny person, a great scholar, true encourager."

Officer Lang was shot inside a Berclair home after a 21-year-old suspect fired multiple times.

She's survived by four children, ages 14, 13, 12 and 2.

"She had looked into (being a police officer) as we were growing up as children," Tucker said. "Of course, we all have dreams. Her just so happened to be a police officer."

While some of their peers may have left Memphis to achieve their goals, Tucker says that was never his friend's plan.

"This is where her heart was," he said.

A memorial fund has been set up at SunTrust Bank for Officer Lang and her children.

On Monday, Dec. 17, the Memphis Police Association will be at the Wolfchase Galleria to collect funds for the Officer Lang Memorial.

FOX13 News and Q107 will also be at the Wolfchase Galleria to assist the MPA in collecting funds for the memorial.
