University of Memphis' Shaq Goodwin has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first conference honor for the 6-foot-9, 243-pound forward.
Goodwin is the first Tigers freshman to receive the accolade since Will Barton last earned the honor on Feb. 14, 2011.
The Atlanta, Ga., native led the Tigers to a 2-0 week with victories over Ohio 84-58 and Austin Peay 83-65. In the two contests, Goodwin averaged 12.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals. He shot 66.7 percent from the field and 72.7 percent from the free throw line.
Goodwin nearly posted a second-straight double-double with 20 points and nine boards in the Dec. 5 win over Ohio. The 20 points were a season high, and he also recorded season bests for free throws made (8) and attempted (10). In the second half versus the Bobcats, Goodwin netted the Tigers' first 10 points (two layups, two dunks, one tip-in) to extend a 36-28 halftime lead to 46-34.
In the Dec. 8 Austin Peay contest, Goodwin netted only four points, but pulled down eight boards and set season highs for assists (5) and steals (4).
The Tigers (6-2) return to action Saturday, Dec. 15 when they host longtime rival Louisville (8-1) at FedExForum. The game, to be broadcast on Fox Sport Net, is slated for a 1:30 p.m. (CT) start.
