New Route 29 All-Electronic Interchange Opens To Drivers In Chester County

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. -

A new, "All-Electronic Interchange" that links State Route 29 with the mainline Turnpike in Chester County officially opened to drivers Tuesday.

Gov. Tom Corbett joined Pennsylvania Turnpike Commissioners for a ribbon cutting.

The new link is the first four-way interchange to be constructed on the mainline Turnpike in decades and is solely for use by E-ZPass customers, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority said.

Developers say the Route 29 Interchange will reduce congestion at the Valley Forge Interchange, at the I-76/Route 202 Interchange and on Route 202 itself.

"All-Electronic Interchanges are much less expensive to build and operate than cash toll plazas, and they represent the future of toll collection as the Turnpike works to convert to a cashless system in the coming years," Commissioner Pat Deon said in a statement.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission says the new interchange was funded by toll revenues without any state or federal at dollars. The design work began in 2002 and was performed by Allan A. Myers Inc. of Worcester, Pa.

It was a soupy start today. We can expect many clouds, some sun, lots of humidity, and a chance of pop up showers any time. At least it'll be warmer: High around 80-degrees today.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. Warm temps stick around, too. And we do mean stick...because it'll be humid, too.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
