Senate Proposes Eliminating Beach Tags For Towns That Accept Aid

Posted: Updated:

A proposal from members of the U.S. Senate suggests towns that accept federal aid after Hurricane Sandy eliminate their beach tags.

Officials along the Jersey Shore fear getting rid of the tags could be more economically damaging than the storm itself.

Cape May Mayor Edward Mahaney says the plan would take away a user fee that is a right of local municipalities to assess and be accountable to their taxpayers.

If the law passes, towns along the Jersey Shore may have to raise property taxes to pay for lifeguards, beach replenishment and maintenance.
