No doubt about it, the flu is hitting early and hard. Michigan is one of the states with reported high influenza-like illness activity.

Lake Fenton High School freshman Joshua Polehna became ill over winter break and had to be hospitalized. Sadly, he died over the weekend from what is being described as flu-like symptoms.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Influenza cases are on the rise in Michigan, according to the Department of Community Health. Dr. Denise Shuttie with Providence Hospital told us what she recommends for someone fighting the flu and what should never be done to treat a child with the illness.
What segments of the population are most at-risk for serious flu complications?
"Young children, pregnant women and elderly patients who have comorbid illnesses such as heart disease, lung disease and may be battling cancer," said Shuttie.
When should someone go to the hospital?
"You should bring anyone if they're having any difficulty in breathing, they're not interacting with you like they should, or if they're not able to drink and eat," the doctor explained.
If you're tackling the flu at home, what should and shouldn't you do?
"You should make sure you drink plenty of fluids. I don't believe in starving a cold, so eat if you can hold down food, and I want you to take Tylenol or acetaminophen to lower your temperature, but absolutely no child should receive any aspirin product. You could cause Reye syndrome, which is a very lethal illness," Shuttie said.
Remember, the CDC recommends that pretty much anyone over the age of six months old get the flu shot and it's not too late. Once you do get that shot, it will take about two weeks for your immunization to fully kick in.
Any doctor will also tell you the number one way to protect yourself from the flu is to keep washing your hands.
