Perhaps it's to be expected during this seemingly interminable slog, but for at least the seventh time since testimony began back in September, the Grim Reaper has cast his shadow over people I have met, people I know and people close to me.
The first hit to Bobby Ferguson's team came last month when Gerald Evelyn collapsed in court. His health scare delayed the trial for two weeks. Now, Susan Van Dusen's nose is out of joint -- figuratively and literally -- delaying the case for at least a day.
However, the real damage being done to Ferguson's case is the work of Kathleen McCann, an executive with Soave Enterprises, who said working with Ferguson was so frustrating she told her employees to document their dealings with him. She also said they only worked with Ferguson because Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick told them to do so, but she stopped short of calling Ferguson a crook.
McCann pulled no punches Monday, testifying that Ferguson demanded $1.5 million from a $50 million project, even though it didn't seem like he wanted to do any work.
McCann defied Ferguson attorney Susan Van Dusen's attempts to explain away Ferguson's intransigence. When Van Dusen asked her quote, "You knew he was fighting for his employees to get work, correct?" McCann shot back, "No, Mr. Ferguson was fighting for himself."
During a recess shortly after their heated exchange, Van Dusen fell and injured her nose forcing the case to adjourn early.
We've learned the case will now be delayed until Wednesday.
As you may have read in our live blog of the case, Judge Nancy Edmonds is joking the case may be snakebit. While we're not superstitious, it sure does seem like a lot of things are popping up to drag this case out.
