Parents Charged After Removing Baby From Hospital

Prosecutors say two parents face endangering the welfare of a child charges for allegedly taking their child from one hospital and trying to put her in another.
April Saul and Daniel Rivera's 3-month-old baby was being treated in the NICU Unit of Lehigh Valley Hospital when they allegedly removed the baby from monitoring equipment and tried to leave, according to the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office.
The couple's daughter was born in mid-July and had remained at the hospital due to her delicate medical condition. She needs monitoring until she can meet the requirements to go home, authorities said. Her parents were required to attend educational instruction on how to take care of their baby, but they did not yet meet these requirements.
On Oct. 23, Saul and Rivera visited their daughter. According to police, they removed the girl from her monitors and crib and tried to leave the NICU.
The parents argued with nurses and doctors and insisted they were going to leave with their baby. The parents told staff they planned to bring the baby to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Police eventually caught up with the family and the baby was returned to the hospital. She had a very low, life-threatening body temperature, officials said.
Saul and Rivera face the child endangerment charges along with related offenses. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 14.
