Monday night vigil thanks, honors slain Cold Spring officer

COLD SPRING, Minn. -

A candlelight vigil was held in Cold Spring on Monday to honor a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Officer Tom Decker was fatally shot Thursday when he and his partner went to check on a man who was reportedly suicidal. Authorities say Decker was ambushed.

One resident of Cold Spring organized the candlelight vigil so she could thank Decker "one last time." Lisa Stukey said Decker came to her house about a year ago when she thought she had an intruder and described him as "very brave."

Stukey got the family's consent to hold the vigil. It will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Wenner Funeral Home. Participants are asked to bring candles or flashlights.

Earlier on Monday, a two-hour meeting was held at Cold Spring City Hall to prepare for Decker's final farewell. Kevin Torgerson is the commander of the Law Enforcement Memorial Association honor guard, and he urges everyone to become a part of the procession.

"Those messages on cardboard or posterboard really mean a lot," Torgerson said. "When the family comes and Cold Spring folks come by, that's just huge."

During the traditional procession from the church to Decker's final resting place in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery, the family will break off and take a separate route in honor of a man who gave much to many communities.

"They are actually going to go through some of the towns he served in and go past the farm place with their procession, so it'll be a chance for him, Tom, to bid farewell to the farm and the communities he's called home and worked for the last several years."

The Cold Spring Police Department has received hundreds of calls and cards from citizens offering support and help.
