Army still treating injured Horn Lake soldier

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Army medic Pvt. Taylor Odom of Horn Lake, Miss., who was severely injured in an accident during a military training session, was supposed to come home Friday. Instead the Army is keeping him a little while longer.

"The doctors told her (Odom's biological mother) he has a 12-year-old mentality and if he was to hit his head it would probably kill him," says Brandi, Odom's stepmother, "That makes me worried. That we won't ever see him again or if we do, will he remember?"

Odom is being treated at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he was originally based.

His family was originally told the 19-year-old soldier be coming home for follow-up treatment.

Brandi and Chris Taylor were raising money to afford transportation to bring their stepson home to follow up treatment after he was severely injured in military school after a Humvee rolled over and threw Odom out of it. They say the military then told them they would fly him home free of cost, which later changed to keeping Odom in Colorado.

Fort Carson Public Affairs staff told FOX13 News they transferred Odom to the Evans Army Community Hospital. He will be treated at the Army hospital's Warrior Transition Battalion for follow up treatment.

"The way things are going, it seems like a lot of that it would cost them more money to bring him home and deal with these doctors which are really good," says Chris, Odom's stepfather, "Instead it would save them a lot of money if they just take him to the base."

The Taylors said Odom, who graduated Army Basic Military Training in October, was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in February 2013. Due to his injuries, it is unclear of the future of those orders.

The Taylors have been told Odom will be home by the end of December near Christmas, but are not sure what day yet.
