If you want to see a bona fide hat person, take a look at Johnny Depp.
Probably no one in film changes their look more drastically than this great actor.
One of the major look changers for Depp are hats and head gear of all kinds.
A change of hat can result in a real change in attitude and over all appearance.
That much influence over one's image may account for the huge success of Buckaroo Hatters in Covington, Tenn., a business that Mike Moore started in the bathroom of his home several years ago that has grown into the go to place for custom hats.
People come from all over the world to be fitted for a Buckaroo hat.
"The Internet has driven them in from Norway, Germany, Thailand, Chili, all over the U.S.," Moore said. "The proudest thing in my career is when I first started making hats. For sure, the first hat order was from a gentleman from Texas, 'cause Texas have about 25 hatters. When I got that order I said all right, I have hit the big time."
The big time for sure.
Buckaroo Hatters has moved from Moore's bathroom to a small store in Covington to the present day location just off the town square. But Moore and his only associate at Buckaroo, Rocky Jonakin, another life-long hat lover, have never changed.
"To me and Rocky, our philosophy is we make a hat for the working man and woman," Moore said. "Okay, the person that punches the time clock, the person that really is having to watch the money and so forth, but wants a good hat. There has been numerous times we've had people come in here and they wanted a good hat. I'll do something to get them in a hat, I'll let them have the hat, I'll get them in a hat, pay me when you can, and put some down next month, pay some two months from now. I have done that several times and Earle I have never, never been bit."
"We like to let people see what they are getting you; know they have no idea how hats are made," Jonakin added. "I'm fixing to pull this one here, kind of give you an idea I got this hat on the steamer. Our hats run anywhere from $205 and go up to about $335 without options added to it. Now some of these are hand-painted, top and bottom or brims. These hats can go for $850 - $1,200 depending on the quality of hat body you choose."
Apparently the price is right along with the quality of Buckaroo Hats because the hat lover just keep coming.
"We had them come in from Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville," Moore said. "Usually with in an eight-hour radius you are going to have people that will drive all the way to come to a custom hat shop. The closest one to Memphis is probably Oklahoma City."
So if you are a real hat lover, count your blessings. You have one of the best couple of hat makers in the country just down the road.
You will have the time of your life picking out the hat of a lifetime.
