Off-duty Memphis police officer Ryan Mendoza was arrested for DUI after he crashed his truck early Monday morning near I-40 and Appling Road, police said.
Officer Mendoza, who has been part of the Memphis police force since JUly 2007, was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving, Leave Scene of Accident - PD Only, and Financial Responsibility.
According to a police report, officers were dispatched just before 3:30 a.m. after receiving a crash call in the vicinity of I-40 and Appling Road. Officers discovered Officer Mendoza's 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 off the roadway on I-40, westbound on the Appling Road off ramp.
Officer Mendoza though was not inside his truck.
After tracking down vehicle registration, Memphis officers went to Officer Mendoza's house, and he answered the door. Officers said Mendoza appeared to be intoxicated with bloodshot watery eyes and a mild smell of intoxicates. He told officers that he was driving the truck at the time of the crash.
Mendoza was relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
Officer Mendoza appeared in court Wednesday morning but was ordered back Dec. 4 to be present with an attorney. Until then he ream ins free on his own recognizance.
