HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WJBK) -- A suspect is in police custody after a barricaded gunman situation Friday afternoon on Lancaster near I-94 in Harper Woods ended peacefully with nobody injured.
A 41-year-old, married father of two allegedly fired a weapon in his backyard. Neighbors called police.
More police responded, more shots were heard. The suspected gunman then came out of his house.
"Fired two shots at one of our officers, who was out behind his car in the street. The officer exchanged gunfire with him. The suspect then went back into his house and barricaded himself in there," said Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke.
Back inside, the suspected gunman called his relatives and reportedly told his cousin he was going to take his own life. She and his brother rushed to the scene and spoke with their loved one by phone. Relatives talked him into coming out.
"My cousin saved his life because she made it in time enough to talk to him," said brother Vasquez Stinson.
Meanwhile, the suspect was described as a good father.
"You couldn't ask for a better father. Was so proud of his kids and loving and everything," said neighbor Patty Bellomo.
"He walks his kids to school. He picks his children up. He does homework and everything that he can with his kids and his family. All he cares about is his family," Stinson said.
