King, Nichols sign with Tigers Hoops Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Nick King and Austin Nichols both signed national letters of intent Friday to attend the University of Memphis beginning in the fall of 2013.


The following are biographical sketches on King and Nichols:

Nick King:

  • 6-7/210
  • Memphis, Tenn./East High School
  • Entering his final year of prep basketball at East High School in 2012-13
  • A consensus top-50 recruit
  • Rated nationally by Scout.com (No. 21), ESPN.com (No. 31), Rivals.com (No. 40) and MaxPreps.com (No. 47) … A consensus top-10 small forward in the nation … Ranked among the country's top small forwards by Scout.com (No. 7), ESPN.com (No. 8) and Rivals.com (No. 10) … ESPN.com rated him the region's No. 8 recruit and the state of Tennessee's No. 2 player
  • In 2011-12, averaged a double-double with 20.1 points and 10.2 rebounds
  • Led District 16AAA in scoring
  • Also averaged 1.8 blocked shots
  • Pulled down 20 boards versus Bartlett High School in the Class AAA Sectional
  • Helped lead East High School to a 23-9 overall record and the 2012 Tennessee Class AAA state championship
  • The Mustangs were the Region 8AAA runner-up
  • Selected as MVP of the Tennessee Class AAA state tournament
  • Named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Class AAA All-State team
  • Picked The Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps Player of the Year
  • Also named to the Appeal's Best of the Preps All-Metro squad
  • Selected the District 16AAA Player of the Year and named to the All-District 16AAA team
  • As a sophomore in 2010-11, named to The Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps All-Metro team

Austin Nichols:

  • Rated nationally by ESPN.com (No. 13), Rivals.com (No. 20), MaxPreps.com (No. 22) and Scout.com (No. 50) … Ranked among the top-15 power forwards in the country by ESPN.com (No. 6), Rivals.com (No. 6) and Scout.com (No. 15)
  • ESPN.com ranked him the region's No. 4 player and the state of Tennessee' No. 1 recruit
  • In 2011-12, named Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Division 2AA's Mr. Basketball (state Player of the Year)
  • A Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Division 2 All-State pick
  • Selected to The Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps All-Metro squad
  • Finalist for The Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps Player of the Year honor
  • Last season, helped lead Briarcrest Christian School to a 24-6 overall record
  • The Saints were the Division 2AA state runner-up and Division 2AA West Region champion
  • Averaged 18.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocked shots, leading the Division 2AA West Region in all three statistical categories
  • Shot 68.5 percent from the field, which was tops in the Shelby Metro area
