Hundreds of volunteers are gearing up for Memphis' big Thanksgiving Day meal and clothing giveaway on Nov. 22.
In less than 10 days literally thousands of people will be lined up downtown at the Cook Covent ion Center on North Main Street for turkey and dressing and all the trimmings. They will also be looking for warm coats, blankets, socks, and gloves to make it through the winter.
The turkey and dressing and all the trimmings have been taken care of, but the warm clothes .... well that's not going so well.
In years past, warm clothes have never been a problem. Warm clothes came in by the car load. Shirley Williams, who has been volunteering for the past 27 years, said this year is different.
"Memphians have always come through what ever we need we always been able to get," she said. "Bellevue Baptist gave all the socks we need, but we need blankets very desperately. We need blankets."
It seems the economy has had an impact on the giving so far this year but like she said, Memphians always come through. Williams says she's not looking for donated coats.
"Not coats, because they'd have to be new you," Williams said. "Have to have a lot of money for coats. We need blankets, caps, gloves and scarves and snack food not - food for the dinner, Cargill buys the food for dinner.
So take a couple of minutes out of your next trip to the store and buy a $6 blanket. That can be your part of putting the thanks in Thanksgiving. You don't even have to drop it off. Williams and her grandson will come pick it up. That's what they do every year. All you have to do is your part.
You can call her at 901-690-9615 or drop off the blankets, hats, scarves, and gloves Thanksgiving morning a the Cook Convention Center.
