HOWELL, Mich. (WJBK) -- 43-year-old Raulie Casteel, a husband and father, is accused of attempted murder and of terrorizing drivers in four counties along the I-96 corridor in October, shooting at dozens of people, hitting only one.

"I'm going to order a review at the forensic center for competency and criminal responsibility," 52nd District Court Judge Brian MacKenzie said Wednesday morning in Novi.

Does he understand the 60 charges against him in Oakland County?  Can he assist in his own defense?  His own mother has reportedly questioned his mental health, but his attorneys objected to the forensic exam.

Casteel also appeared in Howell Wednesday afternoon.  His wife and parents were there showing their support.  He's facing additional charges for shooting at a motorist in Livingston County.  Again a competency exam, which can take 60 to 90 days, was ordered before the case against him can proceed. Again his attorneys objected.

"A forensic evaluation was ordered in Oakland County and when it put that issue into play, we felt we needed follow suit here," said Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse.  "They told the judge that they were not asking for that."
