Hammond Blog: Lions Beat Jax

Posted: Updated:

Not only was Sunday's win in Jacksonville the Lions most complete win of the season, it was also their most dominating margin of victory since a Christmas Eve win over the Chargers. Now, Before you decide to jump down my throat with claims of "They should have won this game," consider the ups and down of the NFL for a moment. So far this season, New England has lost to Arizona, the Giants have lost to the Cowboys and the same New Orleans team that also beat San Diego has also lost to the Chiefs. My point is this; Nothing is ever a Gimme, in a game where a ball that holds 8 to 10 pounds of air and is shaped liked a boomerang can bounce so many different ways on any given week.

Winning can never be assumed - in any sport. But when so much is on the line and teams are playing with desperation anything can happen. On Sunday, the Lions made sure that the only thing that was going to stop them was their lack of efficiency and they dictated the tempo of play, on offense and defense. Sure Scott Linehan's offense seized every opportunity to get the ball to a single covered, albeit injured Calvin Johnson. But let's make one thing perfectly clear - the only thing that will ever be questionable about Johnson is how much eye black he'll apply before taking the field. Healthy or injured he is, and always will be, the best player on the field in any game the Lions compete in.

Running the ball became a key piece in this victory today as the Lions finally uncorked Mikel LeShoure with some crafty blocking up front, then watched as Joique Bell provided the bubbles for a one-two punch that left fans in Detroit dizzy for a full 60 minutes. It's been a long time since we've seen a running back wearing Honolulu Blue and Silver rush for 3 touchdowns in the first half (Barry Sanders never did it) let alone a single game. But savor it - because they did what they had to when they needed to do it most.

At the end of the day, the Jacksonville Jaguars are, exactly what we thought they were, but how many times have you, as fans been able to say - 'yeah we whooped 'em and we should have'? Hmm, that's what I thought. If this win was not perfect enough for you because the opponent was not respected enough, well then I guess you will always find fault with everything the Lions do. But if you, like I, can point to the consistent execution, lack of penalties, third down conversions and big plays on defense - You'll see clearly that Sunday's win over Jacksonville was a success.

Only then will you come to see, with you're glass half full, that getting to the half way mark by finding the .500 mark, is the best case scenario for a Lions team that is finally hitting its stride.

When most people hear the name Devin Gardner, they think of him only as the quarterback at the University of Michigan. For the family of Josh Oleksiak of Chesterfield Township, Gardner means so much more.
