Voters line up to cast absentee ballots

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday morning, voters lined up to cast their absentee ballots in the final weekend before Election Day, prompting city clerks across the state to extend their hours.

Voters who can't make it to their polling place on Election Day due to travel, disability or illness get several chances to vote absentee, but the pace picked up this weekend.

"I thought it was great -- especially for me," said Mustafa Adam, who has difficulty standing for long periods of time.

Adams was hardly alone. In fact there was plenty of company in the clerks' offices.

"It's nice. We have volunteers offering services for those of us who might be out of town," said Melissa Langford.

Even though the staff opened the doors early when they saw people waiting outside to vote, some voters still had to wait 10 or 15 minutes to vote because the voter traffic was bumper-to-bumper, Bloomington City Clerk Janet Lewis told FOX 9 News.

"I think people feel as if the issues are important," said absentee voter Gregory Langford. "They really want to be heard, so this offers a good opportunity to do that if you can't be there on that particular day."

Casey Carl, Minneapolis city clerk, told FOX 9 News they could be on track to surpass their absentee turnout from the last election.

"We anticipated [Saturday] will be our largest single day of absentee voters. By comparison, in 2008, we had over 1,000 voters in that day," Carl said, adding that it could hint toward large crowds on Tuesday.

Edna City Hall also saw a strong turnout, and the lines didn't surprise those who came to vote.

"I wonder if people just know that this is really important and there's a lot at stake here," said Rachael Kroog. "They want to make sure their vote gets counted."

The last chance for voters to cast an absentee ballot is Monday.

Those planning on voting on Election Day should remember that many polling places have changed due to recent redistricting
