CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -- Surveillance video shows a man dressed in all black (pictured above) wasting no time drawing his gun as he entered the Mobil gas station at 16 Mile and Harper in Clinton Township.  At the same time, the only clerk on duty came from the back room.  He threw an ash tray at the gunman but missed, scattering ashes on a cooler.

Police say the gunman shot the clerk four times -- once in the eye and three times to the upper torso -- but couldn't figure out how to work the cash register and ran off empty handed.

We're told the attempted robbery and shooting happened around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Police are scouring through surveillance video looking for clues, but we're told multiple nearby cameras weren't working.

The clerk was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.  He was able to tell police the suspect was not a regular customer and the gun was a revolver, but police and doctors believe that may have been the clerk's last interview, which means tips from you could be the only way to solve this case.

That suspect is described as a black male wearing several layers of clothing and a scarf around his face.
