LeDuff: Wayne Co. airport board recording raises questions

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- It was a year ago that Turkia Mullin was removed from her executive director post at Metro Airport.  Fox 2's Charlie LeDuff says he has "obtained the recording of the back room deal where the airport commissioners fired her in the wake of the Wayne County severance scandal."

In the recording, LeDuff says you can hear "that some of the airport commissioners believe that Mullin was trying to turn Metro Airport into (Bob Ficano's) ATM, awarding million dollar, retroactive, no bid contracts to the county."

LeDuff adds that you also hear on the recording "that while Mullin was running the airport, she wanted to maintain her position as executive director of Edge Opportunities."

As for Ficano's response, he tells LeDuff, "This is involving litigation.  At this point, all I can say is that things have been taken care of.  We're moving forward in the county, and I think the airport at this point hasn't suffered any consequences whatsoever."

Watch the video report for much more on this story.  LeDuff plays parts of the recording.  The county executive also has a little surprise for our reporter.
