DeSoto County pushes for broadband

Posted: Updated:

DeSoto County supervisors are calling it "The Broadband Push," a county-wide survey to find out who does and who doesn't have broadband high speed Internet access.

The survey found that a large amount of the county does not have broadband Internet and has leaders very concerned.

DeSoto County supervisor Lee Caldwell has received hundreds of calls, many of them from senior citizens who depend on the Internet to order medication or get information.

Caldwell describes broadband Internet coverage in DeSoto County like Swiss cheese; you've got holes in areas. There is a concern that the lack of broadband in some parts of the county is driving away business in certain parts of the county.

It is infrastructure. If you do not have broadband in place, the businesses are not going to locate there.

Forty percent of the area DeSoto County encompasses does not have broadband, which is a real problem for college, high school, and grade school children that live in those area. Some use air cards or use their phones as hotspots, but that doesn't always work out so well.

Many residents who don't have high speed Internet access use the library, but you have to work around the library's hours. Caldwell says she doesn't like how the lack of broadband is holding the county back, she says it affects business, education, and one of the most bothersome things to her, she's heard of it affecting military families.

If DeSoto County receives county-wide broadband, it would be the first county in the state of Mississippi to do so.

You can pick up a copy of the broadband survey at the supervisors office or any library in DeSoto County.
