SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- A movie featured at Sundance is making its debut in the metro Detroit area, but not before one of its lead actors made a stop at FOX 2.  For Omari Hardwick, it's kind of like coming home.

"I was here this time last year doing 'Sparkle' and hanging out with the late, great Whitney and Jordin Sparks and Derek Luke and Mike Epps and Carmen and Tika, and it was beautiful," he said.

Hardwick stars in the new movie "Middle of Nowhere" set to open at the AMC theatre in Southfield Friday night.  The film is a modern day love story about a husband serving time in a California prison and the struggles he and his wife are forced to face.

"We haven't seen it told from the perspective of two people fighting to remain with each other with jail being the thing in between them," Hardwick explained.

He is no stranger to the big screen.  He has been cast in the past in "Sparkle" and in the film "For Colored Girls", but the former NFL player and University of Michigan recruit couldn't be more proud of this project and the reviews it's already getting.

"I'm really excited for Ava DuVernay for being recognized in Sundance Film Festival, for the first time winning as a black person in general and specifically a black woman to win best director in Sundance, which is incredible," Hardwick said.
