Karen Boyd-Thomas, the 31-year-old mother of two whose body was found Thursday in the Loosahatchie River, had been a victim of domestic violence, Memphis police said.
Hours after her nude body was pulled from the river, Ms. Thomas' husband was arrested and charged with her murder. She had called police several times after she felt her life was in danger.
In 2008, Ms. Thomas was reluctant to tell police anything, after they noticed bruises on her body while responding to a vandalism call at the home.
But within the next couple years, she would make several 9-1-1 calls to report her husband's violence against her.
Police records show Ms. Thomas called police several times, after she says her husband, Terrence Thomas, abused her.
In February 2008 she called police after they had an argument and shortly after, the power went out. When police responded to the vandalism on the electrical box, they noticed bruises on her body, but she refused to provide details or prosecute.
The February 2008 report notes Terrence Thomas made previous verbal threats to harm or kill Karen or Karen's family at least once before.
About six months later, Karen spotted her husband with another woman, and confronted him. In August 2008, Karen said Terrence started to get physical and wanted her to give him the keys, grab her stuff, and get out. When Karen drove off she says Terrence followed her in his vehicle. At one point, he caused her to swerve in and out of traffic.
In the August 2008 incident, Karen said she felt Terrence was going to run her off the road and she called 9-1-1 to alert police. Terrence eventually left and returned home, the report said.
Two years later in June 2010, the violence between the couple had escalated according to another report filed with police. It showed they had a heated argument about their marriage problems after Terrence came home drunk and angry. The report stated Terrence slapped, punched, and choked Ms. Thomas.
He admitted to police he put his hands on Karen and was arrested, the report in 2010 said. While Karen suffered bruises, scratches and swelling, she declined any medical treatment.
Terrence Thomas also has a pending aggravated assault case from 2011 and it is unclear if it is related to any of the past domestic violence incidents filed with Memphis police. A court date has been set for February 2013.
