WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. -- West Bloomfield police officers rushed into a home to save a man's life only to watch him end the life of one of their own. Monday, police released the 911 and police radio calls painting an even more heartbreaking picture of what was happening inside that house.
The first 911 call came from 50-year-old Ricky Coley's brother, Kenneth.
"There's a gunshot fired here at 4558," he said. "My brother has barricaded himself in his room."
"And he has a gun?" the brother was asked.
"Yes ma'am, he has several guns."
"Does he have all the guns in the room with him?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Why did he lock himself in there?"
"Because my mom was trying to gem him to come out... cause we're trying to get him to move with us... come back home."
West Bloomfield Police arrived on the scene and the officers' statements reveal they spent time learning all they could about the man barricaded inside that house. They learned he was recently divorced, being evicted from his home and on medication. His ex-wife showed police a text message saying, in part, "C U (on the) other side."
On a police radio call, an officer said, "He could have inflicted a gunshot wound on himself. We don't know yet. P.D. has not made contact with him yet."
They knew he was heavily armed.
"Subject saying he possibly could have a high powered rifle, an Uzi and a Beretta."
Police went into the house, an officers said, "Ricky, this is the West Bloomfield Police Department. We are here to help. Are you okay?" Coley never responded. Officers went upstairs towards the master bedroom and Coley opened fire.
Officer Patrick O'Rourke had been shot. His fellow officers carried him out of the house. Officer O'Rourke did not make it. The standoff continued for hours until police discovered Coley had taken his own life.
This tragedy serves as further proof of the sacrifice officers make every day.
