Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson is one of 14 Mid-South mayors now part of what is being called the "Mid-South Air Service Task Force."
The group's goal is to find cheaper air carriers and cheaper flights for Memphis International Airport.
Mayor Johnson says airfares at Memphis International are among the highest in the country and that is not good for communities anywhere in the Mid-South that are trying to lure new businesses to the area.

"You know there are corporations that are already in the Memphis metro area and others that are looking at us and they fly their employees out by the hundreds every week," the mayor said. "So a few dollars in airfare up or down affects their bottom line dramatically."
The 14 mayors met earlier this week to discuss ways to lure cheaper air carriers to Memphis, including incentives like reimbursing the airlines for empty seats that they might have with certain flights into Memphis.
