While some are looking for jobs, others have come up with an idea for a start-up company.
That is where Emerge Memphis continues to play an important role, a decade after it was established.
Emerge Memphis is located in one of the many refurbished buildings in downtown near the South Bluffs, Just looking at the old outside of this building gives you no indication of the really cool cutting-edge, high-tech things that are going on inside.
Digital countdown clocks all around remind the tenants of Emerge Memphis just how much time they have left to reach their goal. What ever that goal is, and they are many and extremely diverse.
Emerge companies rent their spaces, but have access to conference rooms and other amenities like copiers, mail and delivery service. More importantly they have access to executive mentors like board member Don Hutson, best selling author of the One Minute Entrepreneur.
"As a board member I try to help people learn what they can learn as enhance the opportunity they get so a lot of companies have been here for a few years graduate with a number of employees and function like a company, then move out into a regular office building like a regular company," he said. "Emerge Memphis is here to help them get started."
This small business incubator has now grown to the point that there is no more space in the building for new start-up companies, which adds even more importance to those countdown clocks found through out the building. Now once your time runs out, you have to vacate.
Jennifer McCollough recently took her company, The Uptown Grocer, from a small do-it-yourself start-up and was lucky to co-rent a space at Emerge while she moves into a national distribution of her food line.
"One of my big draws to Emerge is I use to work alone and that can be isolating at times," she said. "Right now, I'm out of my kitchen, no longer manufacturing my product. Someone else is doing that. I focus on the big picture and sales and marketing. When I was operating out of my house with laundry piled up I don't have the focus I need, so this is perfect. It's perfect.
If Emerge Memphis sounds perfect for your great idea or start up business, you may want to keep an eye on one of these countdown clocks because there is a waiting list for new tenants. But that's a good thing for everyone. It means something is happening out there.
