DeSoto Co holds greenway gun meeting

HERNANDO, Miss. (FOX13) -

The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors has been catching a lot of heat for a gun ordinance that involves the county's growing greenways.

Many gun owners say the board wants to take away their Second Amendment rights by regulating who can bring a gun into a park.

But supervisors contend they are only abiding by Mississippi state law.

The board held a special meeting Wednesday morning to determine just what the law does in regards to guns and greenways.

"We just wanted to go over and make sure what the laws read, and we are trying to get that out, that it is not the board of supervisors that is making these laws," said Supervisor Harvey Lee. "You have got to have a permit and an IC to carry in a park in the state of Mississippi."

The IC course is an eight-hour firearms safety course. Gun owners have to pass it and get a permit before they can carry a gun in a park.
