New towing plan presented for Detroit

New towing plan presented for Detroit

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

The Detroit Authorized Towing Association (DATA) and the board of Police Commissioners presented the Detroit City Council with a new plan to expand the city's role in police authorized towing.

The joint proposal claims to lessen the towing burden on city police and create more than two million dollars in revenue for Detroit by splitting an administrative and storage fee and investing in a software package that would streamline cost.

Council also heard a presentation on behalf of the mayor's office, pushing a previous proposal to cut costs by outsourcing.

DATA proposed a towing rate hike from $75 to $140. This price increase comes amid allegations of illegal towing in Detroit, as seen here on FOX 2 news when a business man recorded his trailer being towed away without his permission.

Jerome Warfield, the Chair for the Board of Police Commissioners points out, "We have to look at what towing companies are doing that. Those towing companies that were recently in the news were not Detroit police authorized towers."

He adds, "We're on the right track. Let us just get a software package that works for our towers and then we'll have a much better system."
