Prominent Attorney Shot in Home Invasion, Business Related or Personal?

They cut hay and raise horses in the hills of Pennsbury Township, Chester County. They're not used to seeing state troopers combing the area trying to solve a violent home invasion robbery in their community that left a prominent local attorney shot in his upscale home.

"That's horrible, that's horrible," said neighbor Veronica Mahaffy. "My neighbor let me know something bad was going on."

Gunshots shattered the night air at the home of bankruptcy lawyer Fred Barakat off Hillendale Road Monday evening. It was  just after 6 p.m. when state police say three masked men broke in and shot the 63-year-old attorney at his hilly estate. Police do not believe this was a random attack.

"My husband's away so I was home and my neighbor called and said lock up," Mahaffy added.

Barakat's Infiniti was still in his open garage Tuesday as state police investigators went door to door in this adjoining neighborhood looking for clues that might help them solve this mystery.

Neighbors were stunned by the shooting in their quiet rural town.

"Not here, no I would have never expected it," one neighbor said.

"Went and made sure all my doors were locked," another added.

Barakat has offices in this nearby Chadds Ford office complex and in Wilmington. No one answered at the Chadds Ford office. He has specialized in bankruptcy law for most of his 35 years in the business.

Police say the three gunman and an unmasked accomplice escaped in a white or cream colored Mitsubishi Diamante.

"And this is in this neighborhood, you would think you would be safe in this neighborhood," Mahaffy said.

Barakat is still hospitalized. His injuries are not said to be life threatening. State Police refused to release any further details on their investigation. No one answered the door at Barakat's home today.
