Suspect commits suicide after fatal stabbing at Chrysler plant

There was a deadly attack Thursday inside the Chrysler Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit. One man was stabbed to death, and the suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Grief counselors have been at Jefferson North all day long as many friends and family are in mourning. Many others are asking if security measures in place at the plant are enough.

"A guy stabbed him in the neck in the plant over an argument," said a distraught relative.

He told Fox 2 that his cousin was dead, stabbed repeatedly in a loading dock area. 43-year-old Keith Readus, a former shop steward, was allegedly killed by co-worker Jeff Hunt, a hi-lo driver at the plant. Hunt committed suicide at Belle Isle, shooting himself in his SUV.

"First break, which was around eight o'clock, a lot of commotion. There was an argument, an altercation. He jumped off his hi-lo and stabbed him," said Jermaine Williams.

The plant was locked down for most of the morning. Sources told Fox 2 that Hunt's wife also worked at the plant and the motive appears to be related to a suspected love triangle, but police are still investigating. They have interviewed her and people who witnessed the murder, and they located the murder weapon, a knife found at the scene.

"There was a brief conversation and after that conversation there was a stabbing that took place," said Detroit Police Inspector Dwayne Blackmon. "There was a definite intention on stabbing this individual."

But just how could this happen inside a plant? Management said there is a no weapons policy, but there are no metal detectors to keep weapons out. There is no word yet on whether or not that could change as a result of this tragedy.

"We're going to learn everything we can from this event and certainly take what we believe to be reasonable measures to make our employees safe," said Chrysler Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Scott Garberdeing.

Meantime, friends of the victim such as Jacketa Stephens, who has known Keith Readus for 30 years, can't understand how anyone could hurt him, let alone take his life.

"He loved his kids and he loved his work. It's just shocking that he went like that."
