The West Tennessee Drug Task Force continues to investigate after arresting a man who led police on a chase through three counties. The suspect crashed into a transformer on Summer Avenue and Waring Road, where he fled on foot and was caught.
"One of our officer's vehicles over there the wires came down on it and actually welded the door. It's just absolutely ridiculous behavior. It's criminal behavior, actually, and that's why he's being charged with it," says Dave McGriff with the West Tennessee Drug Task Force.
McGriff says the vehicle had Illinois licence plates and a stolen assault rifle inside it. Police do not know the suspect's name at this time or if he has a criminal background, but McGriff says he is a white male in his 20s.
Police say the chase began after the driver committed a traffic violation, leading law enforcement through Haywood, Fayette and Shelby Counties. They say the suspect caused an accident on I-40 along the way before crashing on Summer Avenue. No one was injured.
Police charged the suspect with evading law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident, theft and possession of a firearm.
MGLW crews arrived soon after to clean up fluid from the transformer, which they were telling people was dangerous to step on. Crews also replaced and repaired the transformer pole.
Many businesses closed because they were without power after the accident Sunday afternoon.
