Harper Woods facing serious increase in crime

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFoxDetroit) -

A string of crimes in Harper Woods has the city adding extra police officers in efforts to make the streets safer.

Earlier this week a shooting took place out back of Charlie's Woods Saloon after a fight got out of hand. One man is in the hospital.

Less than a week before, employees at the same bar were threatened with an assault rifle.

And just a mile down the road was a carjacking at a gas station.

The city cannot afford to hire full-time officers and they're already down nine officers from the beginning of the year.  They're left with the option of hiring more part-time officers, which they have received the go-ahead to do.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has also promised to try and increase their presence in the city.

Police Chief James Burke told us 54 guns have been taken off the streets in the area, which is double the usual number for this time of year. He also says there have been 2,000 arrests this year alone, in an area that is only 2.6 square miles.
