DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The elder Kilpatrick starred in basketball at Ferris State University, where he also wrote a column called "From the Back of the Bus" for the student newspaper.

He served as a Wayne County commissioner before Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara hired him as a deputy county executive, making him one of the county's highest-ranking officials.

He retired just before his son was elected mayor and started a lobbying firm called Maestro & Associates.

Kilpatrick is believed to have been one of his son's top advisers and a federal grand jury accused him of using his ties to the mayor to get money from city contractors.

He was indicted on six counts of racketeering, extortion and filing a false tax return. The most serious charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

He has said he is innocent of wrongdoing.
