Casino, collective bargaining ballot issues hit roadblock

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

The four members of Board of State Canvassers (pictured above) voted Wednesday to block the people from voting on the creation of eight new casinos across Michigan.  They also deadlocked on whether to allow a vote on a union supported effort to secure collective bargaining rights.

It was a full house as the lawyers and the lobbyists argued the pros and cons of these issues.

The current tribal casinos do not want the competition, and their attorney argued when citizens signed the petitions to put this on the ballot, they did not know what they were signing.

"You can't change the law that the people enacted without them even knowing that's what this is about," said John Pirich.

The citizens didn't know what they were signing?

"I dare say that most lawyers wouldn't know what they were signing when they would've read this petition."

Jonathan Raven, the opposing lawyer, contended, "We think that there [are] an awful lot of flaws in his argument, and we intend to pursue those quite aggressively and with great confidence."

Organized labor will now head for the courts to get its amendment on the ballot concerning collective bargaining rights.

The state board also sent to the ballot a renewable energy proposal and one to unionize healthcare workers.
