"I believe I still have a lot to offer. There [are] a lot of good things that we turned around on the school board for the school district," said Melvin Rose.
However, his spot at the school board table is empty, and it appears he won't be filling it anytime soon. The Madison Heights School Board member is expected to resign after an incident that left his dirty laundry out in the open and left Rose with a gunshot wound to the arm. He told us it all started with a romance.
"She kept telling me she was divorcing her husband. She was leaving."
But that doesn't change the fact that she is married. Rose, however, is not married. He said the two dated for months, but early Sunday morning things took a dangerous turn when he showed up at his girlfriend's Madison Heights home and squared off with her husband. The husband claims Rose went to the house to attack him, but Rose said he showed up because he believed his girlfriend was in trouble.
"Called her phone, heard a bunch of hollering and screaming going on."
He said when he arrived, "I saw four people running around in the front yard, looked like they were all fighting. Guy came running up to my truck, which was her husband, the one that she was supposedly leaving, he ran up to my truck. So when he ran up to my truck, that's when I got out, what's going on, and that's when one thing led to another."
The husband had a gun. The two men started to fight and the gun went off.
"Got really lucky. It went through the top and out the back."
Rose drove himself to the hospital. The husband was arrested, but later released because the gun may have gone off by accident. He was treated for injuries, including bite marks.
Despite the drama and the gunfire, no one is facing criminal charges, but it looks like this school board member is still paying the price.
"I have concerns about choices that he made, and I am concerned about how it reflects on our school," said Cindy Holder from the Madison Heights School Board.
That's why Rose is expected to resign so he can focus on his family and get his life back on track.
"She had no intentions of leaving her husband. There was nothing filed or anything like that and pretty much that she was playing both of us," said Rose. "Getting shot is not worth it for anyone."
The husband refused to do an on camera interview with us, but his attorney did release a statement saying, in part, that no criminal charges were filed in this case and both husband and wife and his whole family want to move on from this situation privately.
