Detroit Police say 29-year-old Latoiya Mitchell is responsible for shooting a barrage of bullets into a crowd of people leaving the Detroit Princess Sunday night.
"She's the individual that I've identified. She's the individual that fired into a crowd of more than likely over a thousand people striking six individuals. She's a danger to society. She's a danger to the people involved in the case, and they deserve justice. She's the one I want in custody now," said Sergant Nathan Duda from Detroit Police.
Police say it all started on the boat's late night cruise, a family reunion turned into a family feud when 31-year-old Michael Thomas got into an argument with a cousin and hit her in the face with a glass. The fight between relatives errupted. The Detroit Princess was forced to dock and kick the entire family off.
That's when police say Thomas told his wife, Mitchell, to grab her registered revolver from the car. He called the shots and she fired, hitting six people. Another woman fired back from the crowd and hit Thomas, the seventh victim. He took a bullet to the spine.
Mitchell loaded her husband into their SUV. Shocking images show her and another woman dumping him at Detroit Receiving Hospital before she abandoned her vehicle.
Mitchell has been on the lam ever since.
Mitchell is doing whatever she can to evade police. We're told she hasn't even visited her children or her husband, who is critically injured in the hospital. She hasn't even been back to her last known address in Saint Clair Shores. Police believe she's hiding out with family members and they are working to track her down.
"The actions speak for themselves. Firing into a crowd of so many people is irresonspible, and the damage it could've caused and lives it could've taken, it's unacceptable," Duda said.
Mitchell has hired attorney Bryon Pitts. He told us he is trying to make arrangements to turn her in. In the meantime, if you know her whereabouts, you're asked to call Detroit Police at (313) 596-1142.
