Detroit man fears he'll be attacked again after van vandalized

Shafik Shoaib doesn't see it as some sort of prank.  He's been the victim of violence before, and he believes this is how it starts.

"I wish I could move from here," he said.

Shoaib is terrified.  He woke up Monday to find his van vandalized.  The attack happened early Monday morning.  Some of the drawings are so vulgar they can't be shown on television.

"Someone [does] this and what's [the] next step."

Shoaib is well aware how bad this could get.  In 2006, he was brutally beaten outside his Detroit home by a group of men, who he says were yelling racial slurs.  The alleged ring leader has since been charged with a crime and left the neighborhood.

"I got stitches in my head.  I got my knees almost broken.  I had to use crutches for about two months."

Now six years later Shoaib fears it could happen again.  He believes the vandalism is the work of another neighbor, but since there is no proof, we won't identify them.

"Three of them [were] yelling ... calling us names.  Calling me a [expletive]."

"I feel bad for him because he's a pretty good guy.  He doesn't bother [anyone]," remarked Archie Skursha, who lives across the street.

He said his daughter saw a little girl playing with white spray paint the day the van was tagged.

Shoaib reported it to police, and he's hoping whoever is behind it stops.  Meanwhile, he says he will be documenting everything that happens from this point on and, if necessary, getting a personal protection order.
