KANSAS CITY, Kan. -

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Continental Tire have released the NCAA Division I Women's College Preseason Rankings and Memphis is ranked No. 14, the organization announced on Tuesday.

"I think this speaks volumes about our program and the direction this program continues to take," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It's always nice to be thought of highly by your peers, but preseason polls don't matter. We are ecstatic to be ranked, but there is a long way to go. If we are sitting there ranked at the end of the season, we are in good shape."

The Lady Tigers climbed to a program high No. 5 ranking in the NSCAA poll last season before ending the season with a remarkable 22-1-1 record. Ranked in the preseason poll for the first time in program history, the U of M is faced with several question marks as the 2012 season approaches.

"We are and extremely young when you look at it closely," Monaghan said. "We have 31 players on the roster and only five of those are seniors or juniors with the rest being sophomores and freshmen. We have a lot of talent, but a lot of inexperience, but that's ok. We are going to work hard and really coach them. This is not last year's team, it's a new very talented team. It's all about how far we can go with this talent. It's a process and it will take some time. Our goal is to go out and compete the best we can every game and hopefully the results favor us."

Monaghan and staff get the first look at the squad in action on Friday in an exhibition match at Illinois State at 1 p.m. The Lady Tigers host Western Kentucky on Sunday at 1 p.m. before traveling to Missouri on Aug. 17 to open the regular season.
