New Home Sought For Long-Neglected Memorial

CHADDS FORD, Pa. -

A long-neglected memorial to local Vietnam War veterans is in need of a good home.

So, FOX 29's Bruce Gordon went to work to get results for residents in Chadds Ford, Delaware County.

The 1966 monument to the men of Delaware County who had fought in the early days of the Vietnam War now sits ignored, just off southbound Route 202 at Hillman drive, in the parking lot of a now-closed bank branch.

Steve Quigley runs the towing company just up the street. He thinks Vietnam vets deserve better

For the past two years, Quigley and some friends have been unofficial caretakers for the monument, knocking down weeds, trimming branches and placing flags on the pole nearby.

Vandals have tried to scavenge the cannon barrel, which is why Quigley wants to give the monument a new home – and soon.

Quigley said people are willing to have fundraisers to help them move it and restore it.

Chadd's Ford township officials said they would consider having the monument moved to the grounds of the municipal building off Route 1, under the right circumstances.

It's really up to the longtime owners of that bank property. That's the Hineman family.

Gordon found Ron Hineman at his place of business, Delaware County Supply Company in Boothwyn.

Hineman declined to talk on camera but said he is not against moving the monument and will discuss the idea with his sibling co-owners this week.

So, the wheels are in motion, the right people are talking, and if we get an agreement the monument will get a new home along with the care it deserves, Gordon reported.
