A walk home from the store turned into a deadly accident scene on Dequindre when police say an elderly man was struck by a driver who just didn't see him.
"We were about half way through the parking lot when we saw the whole event go down," said Harrison Mina.
He and another teen saw something they just can't shake at Dequindre north of Twelve Mile in Warren. Around 10:30 Tuesday night, they watched as an 81-year-old man was struck by a car right before their young eyes.
"I realized I can't just go on thinking about it because it'll traumatize me, and I just got to keep going," said Matthew Stambaugh.
A lot of what they described is just too graphic for television. The boys were among the first to call 911.
"I just witnessed somebody die. We got to call the police and figure out what's going on," Stambaugh said.
Police say the victim had just bought a lottery ticket at a 7-Eleven. The elderly man was on his way back to his apartment when he was hit by a 29-year-old driver. He wasn't at a light or a crosswalk, and she wasn't speeding.
"If you see where the impact on the car was, there was absolutely no way this driver could've avoided the pedestrian," said Warren Deputy Police Commissioner Louis Galasso.
Unfortunately, no way the teens could either. They now say they will go the extra distance and use a crosswalk.
"Definitely wasn't expecting it. I thought it was just going to be a usual run to 7-Eleven and there it was," Mina said.
This was just a horrible situation for everyone involved from the family of the 81-year-old to the driver who hit him. Police say alcohol or drugs were not a factor.
