Though it may seem like there are a lot of stories highlighting crime on the north side of Minneapolis, overall trends have been improving -- and there's a lot more to the story than the numbers.

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minneapolis investigators say they have strong leads in finding the person who fired the bullet that killed 5-year-old Nizzel George on Tuesday, but they still need more information from the public and are now offering a $1,000 reward.

According to Sgt. Stephen McCarty, four homicide investigators with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team are close to identifying the shooter after questioning multiple people.

However, investigators still need more information from the public and are urging anyone with information to call the homicide investigators at 612-673-2941.

Tipsters can also remain anonymous by calling 612-692-8477.

Investigators served two search warrants overnight -- including on at a home at the corner of 45th and Camden avenues. Inspector Mike Martin says that home was shot up the night before George was killed.

The department is very concerned about retaliation so they are putting pressure on people living in both homes, and there are people living in both houses who are currently on probation. That means officers are now cracking down on enforcing the conditions and making home visits.

Officers are working overtime in the area and putting more squads on the streets in an effort to prevent more shootings.

Outside the Bryant Avenue North home where George was shot, a memorial is growing -- but the holes left from a hail of gunfire are still visible on the house.

On Wednesday, the victim's uncle, Robert Tolliver, walked FOX 9 News through the ordeal, saying his nephew was running in fear before collapsing on the family couch to die.

"This door was open. He heard the shots, he got scared -- then he was running in here where we [were]," Tolliver recalled. "I think the bullet caught him coming in here."

The blood-soaked couch was removed on Tuesday, but the tension in the neighborhood is still high. In fact, police have stationed a remote camera across the street from the home because officers said they fear escalation or retaliation in part of an ongoing feud.
