You know smoking puts you at risk for lung cancer and heart disease, and you've probably heard it causes wrinkles and sagging skin. A new British study now finds smoking may also increase your risk of a specific type of skin cancer.
Researchers reviewed about a dozen previous studies and found smokers had a 52-percent higher chance for squamous cell cancer.
Experts say that extra risk is similar to being exposed to UV radiation like the kind you'd get from the sun or a tanning bed.
Although the studies are observational, which makes it tough to say for sure smoking raises the risk of skin cancer, researchers say even the possibility should give you another good reason to quit if you smoke.
