Know the heat index: Humidity hinders the body's cooling ability

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

When we get into this kind of heat, many times we look at the temperature, but when it comes to staying safe it's actually the heat index you need to worry about.

The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels to your body when you factor in relative humidity with the air temperature.   The danger zone when it comes to the heat index number is about 105.  That's when you need to take the heat seriously.

The challenge with humidity is that your body can't cool itself.  It's hard to sweat.  When you can't sweat or cool yourself, heat-related illness can set in.

Age plays a big role.  Teenagers can handle heat better than the rest of us.

Remember, sunburns can also hurt your body's ability to cool itself.
