ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -
It's getting harder and harder to get your hands on K2, Spice and other synthetic drugs, the creative names of the incense vary, but the unpredictable danger and possibly deadly effects are the same.
That's why officials from Wayne and Macomb counties and certain cities and townships have taken matters into their own hands and banned it.
Oakland County is pushing for its stores to take a pledge not to sell it, but that doesn't mean people still can't get it. It's being sold online. By contacting one individual, we were directed to Washtenaw County -- Ann Arbor -- because it's still legal there.
We found one store that was still selling synthetic drugs. We talked to Ann Arbor Police. They said until Washtenaw County or the City of Ann Arbor bans it, really there's nothing officers can do.
Meanwhile at the Diag Party Shop, the owners learned of the dangers and decided to pull it last week. We were shown where it used to be.
"After we heard all the controversy about it, we just didn't want to have [any] problems with it, so we got rid of it," said Jerome Gilbert.
"We don't want to be the place where people come to when they can't get it anywhere else," Washtenaw County Health Officer Dick Fleece remarked.
Fleece says right now Washtenaw County is asking stores not to sell it. Officials are also working on implementing a public health order much like the one in Macomb County ordering them to take it off the shelves. A violation could mean fines and jail time.
"A lot of people have already pulled it. Hopefully this will help motivate the rest of them."
People may still find a way to get it, but until the state makes it illegal, Washtenaw County is also trying to make it that much harder.
