Dan Langfield Drafted by Reds

Memphis, TN -

Becoming the third-highest draft pick in University of Memphis baseball history, Dan Langfield was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the 109th pick in the third round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.

Langfield is the highest draftee from the University of Memphis since Chad Harville was selected by the Oakland Athletics with the 63rd pick in the 1997 draft. Langfield joins six other former Tigers to be selected in the first five rounds and he is the first since Josh Stewart was drafted in the fifth round of the 1999 draft by the Chicago White Sox.

"Obviously we are very excited for Dan and his family," head coach Daron Schoenrock said." To go from undrafted out of high school to the third round in three years speaks volumes for his work ethic, Coach Corral's pitching plan and what playing in Conference USA can do for a prospect. We wish Dan all the best in his pro career."

Named a First Team All-Conference selection, Langfield posted a league-best 111 strikeouts and fanned 30 via called third strikes. The Somerset, Mass., native had a 7-6 record on the season and a 2.79 ERA in 93.2 innings of work. Langfield finished his career with 252 career strikeouts to rank third all-time.
