The recent arctic chill could end up becoming a huge plus for the travel industry.
Travel agents and online sites like travelzoo.com are seeing more inquiries to escape the cold.
Rhonda McDowell with A & I Travel Service says, "2009 was a year of 'stay-cations' so that's really driven demand for vacations this winter."
McDowell says she's seeing resorts in Jamaica offering free nights as incentives to attract tourists.
According to Travelzoo.com senior editor Gabe Saglie, Las Vegas remains a top bargain destination, saying "if you're looking to stay domestic with Vegas temps at 50-60, there are huge values there...vacation packages you can fly out of Memphis $300 - $350 for 4 nights on the strip."
Delta just announced a bargain fare from Memphis to Fort Lauderdale and from Memphis to Las Vegas for $250 roundtrip.
Airtran has plenty of Florida destinations for about $200, even a roundtrip flight to Puerto Rico for $330, but act quickly since Airtran's sales end Thursday.
"Normally the Puerto Rico air fare would be in the $550 range, so that's a very good deal" McDowell says.
