Mayor Davis Aims to Reduce Debt

Tuesday afternoon marks 3 days until Southaven Mayor Greg Davis must provide receipts to the state of Mississippi auditors office to prove his spending was legit.

"It's 170-thousand about 30-thousand. Of that, is interest and investigative fees," says Davis.

The money was spent over a 2 and a half year period where state audit investigators eyed his spending habits in a nearly year long investigation.

Recently Davis submitted roughly $53,000 in receipts he says backs up his claims that his spending was to lure business to Southaven.

"We submitted some receipts that they asked us to collect the Friday before Thanksgiving. Now, we're waiting to hear back from the state auditor. "

But, the state auditor demanded Davis repay the city because they say he used tax payer dollars for personal expenses, from July 2009 through April 2011. The state says the expenses included a trip to Key West and counseling services.

The state contends Davis still owes $170,000.

"Hopefully they'll see the trend that what we we're doing is spending money on city business, recruiting businesses and things of that nature," he says.
