Major Detroit Public School Reforms To Be Announced Monday Morning

An announcement about school reform is scheduled for Detroit Monday.

Gov. Rick Snyder, Detroit Public Schools emergency manager Roy Roberts and state Superintendent Mike Flanagan are scheduled to make the announcement Monday morning at Renaissance High School.

The governor's office and the struggling school district say U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who once called Detroit "ground zero" for education, is expected to participate via live feed from Washington D.C.

Emails seeking more information were sent to representatives of the governor and the district early Monday.

Roberts is working to trim the district's $327 million budget deficit and improve education. The district's graduation rate lags way behind the national average, and enrollment has dropped from 104,000 in 2007 to 74,000 this year, and is projected to bottom out at 56,000.
