Death Penalty in Phoenix PD Killing

Posted:

A Maricopa County Superior Court jury handed down the death penalty Tuesday against a man who pleaded guilty in the 2007 shooting death of a Phoenix police officer.

Police say 23-year-old Edward James Rose fatally shot 23-year-old Officer George Cortez Jr. after the officer tried to arrest Rose at a west Phoenix check-cashing store on July 27, 2007.

The shooting was captured on the store's surveillance video.

Earlier, Rose's girlfriend, 21-year-old Norma Lisa Lopez, pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder in Cortez's death.

Authorities say Lopez reportedly distracted Cortez, which allowed Rose to shoot him.
