Southern Arizona Border Officer Indicted

A federal grand jury has returned a four count indictment against a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer and five other people alleging that the group conspired to smuggle drugs into the country.

The U.S. attorney's office says the indictment alleges the group planned to bring marijuana through a Douglas port of entry while 32-year-old Luis Carlos Vasquez was on duty. The charges also allege that Vasquez allowed 547 kilograms of marijuana to pass through his inspection lane in June.

The U.S. Attorney's office says in a statement Monday that Vasquez was arrested Friday and had his initial appearance in federal court Monday.

The five others indicted are from Douglas and Agua Prieta, Mexico.

Officials say four of the individuals have been arrested, while a fifth is still at large.
